Game1 at Kerry Park : First stop on Hwy 2 of the playoffs is a thriller with Jordan Sui scoring in OT to put the Braves ahead. The Braves spent much of the night in the penalty box and the Islanders capitalized with two pp goals in the first and second. Pat Sails got the Braves on the board and his victory double axel earned him double time in the box after his stick hit a Islander in the face and drew some blood.Greg Regier then tapped a reverse Hawthorn pass across the crease behind the sprawling Blinko to level the score and silence the local fans.
Ed Lassard showed his playoff temprament by not allowing any rubber to pass the pipes after the midway mark. Sui managed to plant the victory stick at centre ice after he pulled the trigger to ring the final bell.

Updated: Oct 21, 2005 11:17pm PST

September 16 vs Storm (7-3) : Ed Geric returned in time to see his team beat the visitors from Campbell River in convincing fashion at Pearks Areana tonight.
The game had a slow start with the new pants and gloves proving a pleasant,if somewhat stiff, distraction. The Storm leading by two after turnovers in Saanich territory were converted by the Storm machine. They showed no jet lag after being up and down the Island twice in as many days. The Braves managed to scramble out of the period with a 2 goal tie. The Braves dominated the early second period but could not add to the scoreboard. Jim Smart was assessed 5 min penalty and a game misconduct after 10 minutes in the 2nd and the storm PP went to work. They finally managed a goal after a scramble in front of the net for the go ahead goal. With 30 seconds left in the penalty kill, fiery new captain of the Braves, Mike Simpson, stole the puck short handed and danced in for a crucial goal to tie the game up.In the third the Braves seem rejuvinated and the Storm had very little answer to the raids into their territory.
Its been a while since the Saanich team had beaten the Storm at home and it may not be the last.
For the Braves Mike Simpson and LeRoy Young each scored a pair of goals.
Rick Hudson, fresh of the plane from Spokane, had a great game and faced 41 shots. to the 36 of his counterpart.

JANUARY 18 vs PANTHERS (5-2) : To beat the Panthers you need all your ducks in a row. Inspired by spectacular goaltending from Edward Lassard the Braves gained confidence, scored and they win.
Tuesday night the Braves hosted the league leading Peninsula Panthers, who came in on a winning streak taking the last 4 out of their last 5 games. But the streak would come to an end as the strong performance of the Braves goaltender Ed Lassard seemed to be the catalyst for the team. Peninsula who were missing some of their starters, and had two AP in the lineup, seemed lethargic on this night.
The first period was scoreless despite 3 power plays by each team.
The second period featured one goal by PeninsulasÂ’ Ronnie Smith, while the Braves had 2 even strength goals by Johnson and Landolt, and then a powerplay goal from Jacques DuToit while Kyle Rauscher was serving a roughing and misconduct.
The third period had rookie Adam Geric snapped in a feed from DuToit, and then the Panthers tough guy Pederson scored from their newest player Josh Lund. Alan Zimmerman also had an empty net goal to finish the game.

Shots ended up 49-45 for the Braves, and Ed Lassard improved on his stats again, which maintains his position at the top of the leagues goaltenders.

The win also ties Saanich with Kerry Park although the Islanders have played 4 games less.
The Braves looked forward to the challenge this coming week when they face Campbell River on Tuesday night, Victoria on Thursday night and then the Panthers on Friday night.

January Jostling : Tuesday Jan 4th 2005
Saanich 2, Kerry Park 1

Despite outshooting the Braves by a margin of 51-21, the Kerry Park team lost the game. It turned out to be the Ed Lassard show as he continued his impressive played since joining the Braves 7 games ago.

The Braves were guilty of many penalties on the night giving up 11 power play opportunities to just 6 that the Islanders gave back. During the first period which was the Braves best effort, Scott Jamieson started the scoring when he fired in a rebound off a Brian Nugent shot while the Braves were shorthanded. Later in the period it would be Nugent setting up Chris Bell on the point and Bell snapped a hard high shot to the glove side that KP goalie Halpenny looked screened on. The Braves never really created more chances after the first period as the Islanders stepped up the pressure and scored early as Posey converted a pass from Paruk.
The third period was a wild scramble as the Braves had to kill off four penalties to Kerry Parks two, and especially when the Islanders pulled their goalie it became a frantic shot fest against Lassard while Nugent was in the penalty box. Lassard kept all 24 shots out for the Braves to win.

Game notes:
For Lassard this latest win helped him improve his already league leading goal stats, now up to an impressive 2.44 goals against and a save percentage of 93.41.
Kerry Park were missing one of the their top point getters, Riley Kaiser who is serving a 5 game suspension.
Saanich was missing Dave Kucheran also out on suspension and Jacques and Etienne DuToit who are still away on Christmas vacation.

Next game Saturday night at Comox.

DECEMBER 21vs COUGARS : Cougars claw their way to a 2-0 win after a hard fought battle. The Braves controlled much of the play for the first two periods but couldn't solve Cougars tender Matt Thompson who played very well. The Braves Ed Lassard was also solid in net, in a game that featured tight checking and few prime oppourtunities. The Cougars came back strong in the 3rd, and scored twice. For all the stats refer to www.vijhl.com

In between periods it was the PeeWee skills competition, getting down to the semi finals!
In the photo with Ed and Andrea Geric are Wesley Myron, Mikeal Jung, Nathan Hickey, and Lucas Bell. It was a very close finish which finally ended with the two finalists, Wesley Myron of the Raquet Club PeeweeAAA, and Nathan Hickey of the Saanich PeeWeeAAA!
These final two are scheduled to the final race on January 4th.

DECEMBER 17 vs STORM (5-4 OT) : Saanich 5, Campbell River 4 in OT.

In a game that featured some big hits, but no fights, bad calls, and lots of hard battles, the Braves would win in over time due to a solid team effort and very solid goaltending.

Campbell River were missing sniper Jason Jacques who would be playing this night for Port Alberni in their loss to Nanaimo Clippers. The Storm also had a few of their regulars not dressed and 3 affiliate players in. They also no longer have goaltender Jimmy Bernier was signed by the BCHL's Alberni Valley Bulldogs.

The first period had Saanich utilizing a high-energy attack that let them control much of the period. The shots ended at 15 –9 in favour of the Braves and Saanich scored two power play goals, which the Braves haven’t had many of this season. The goals came from Ryan Lee and Pat Sales. The first period also witnessed an ugly looking collision involving the Braves Jacques DuToit. Jacques was heading thru the neutral zone towards Campbell Rivers end when he looked back for a pass, which was coming behind him. In trying to turn back for it, he seemed to slip a little and at the same time got crunched by one of the larger Storm players. It looked bad as “doots” staggered off the ice to the dressing room. In an impressive rebound Jacques started the second and was back to his typical high-level play by the third.

The second period witnessed more Saanich perseverance as they outshot the Storm 19-11, but actually lost the period 2-1. The score was now tied at 3. It was the Storms second goal that upset the Saanich bench as a Storm player fell into the net interfering with goalie Lassard for a few seconds before Justin Dooley slid in the puck to an undefended net. Previously at the Storm goal Jacques Dutoit had been launched by a storm defenseman who cross-checked DuToit heavily from behind into the net. The Saanich bench was shocked as DuToit was assessed a goalie interference penalty, and no call to Campbell River.

The third period was a big resurgence for the Storm as they would outshoot the Braves 18-9, but the only traded single goals with Saanich. Both teams scored at the mid point of the period. It was Lindquist and Nugent setting up Caldwell for the second time this night for the Braves and then dangerous Jordan Siu replying for the Storm.

The regulation time ended tied at 4, and they went to overtime. With 3:21 remaining in OT, it was Travis Lindquist who became free in front of the net and Zimmerman and Baldwin combined to get him the puck that he snapped it up high over Travis Crickards glove. For Lindquist it was his 8th point in the last 3 games, which included 4 goals and 4 assists. This was also his second game-winning goal in the last 3 games as he also had the winner against Oceanside last weekend.

It was a big win for the Braves coming in the Storms barn, at a time when Saanich is trying to regain their confidence of earlier in the season. The combination of solid goaltending and defense, along with the forwards clicking more on their passing has the Braves looking dangerous again, just in time for the game with Victoria this coming Tuesday night at Pearkes

DECEMBRER 14 vs COMOX (4-1) : Saanich 4, Comox 1

It was a scrappy, grinding kind of game. There were very few nice passing plays and it seemed as though the winner would come from the team that jammed it in the best.
Comox would open the scoring with a power play goal, but not until 16:06 mark of the second. It was Butcher from Scott & Rogers, as Pat Sails sat in the box for Saanich. Sails who a few days earlier had his wisdom teeth removed was sporting a full cage to protect his sore jaws from the rigors of his usual tenacious play.
At 8:11 of the second Caldwell would pass to Nugent behind the net who quickly sent it out front of the net to Travis Lindquist who flicked it high over tender Evan Murray. Five minutes later Trevor Verwolf would wrist a low hard point shot that Lee Baldwin would tip between the legs of Murray to make it 2-1 Saanich. Verwolf would later take 3 stitches to the face after a butt end struck him. The second period also witnessed Comox's Devon Aube be ejected for a hit from behind, which seemed to be the only hit the refs saw of the many dangerous from behind and high head shots received by the Braves.
Jordie Landolt would convert a Jacques DuToit feed at 14:15 of the third and then after the Generals pulled their goalie in the last minute, it would be Etienne DuToit potting the empty netter all the way from his own goal line with just 21 seconds left.
Braves new tender Edward Lassard continued his solid play improving his save percentage to .920 and his goals against average to 2.5, which although for only four games, has him ranking very well within the league goaltenders. The Braves put in a solid defencesive effort although their offence was struggling again with an impotent power play going 0 for 6..
Shots ended up at 40-21 as the Braves did control much of the play.
Next game is Friday night at Campbell River.

DECEMBER12 vs OCEANSIDE (4-3) : It was a close match as the Braves barely edged out the Parksville squad Saturday night.

The Generals were seeking redemption for the loss they had taken the night before at Peninsula, making them a motivated group. It was only a few mistakes that led to their loss, in this otherwise evenly played game.

The first period had the Generals up 1-0 quickly on a goal from Scott Moore from Bedard and Sidhu, and it wasnÂ’t till near the end of the period that the BravesÂ’ Caldwell and Nugent combined to setup Ryan Lee wide open on the far side of the net to bang home the equalizer.

The Generals spotted Saanich a few power plays in the first but the roles reversed in the second as the Braves gave the Generals a few extra power plays. It paid off for Oceanside as Corcoran put in their second.

The third period witnessed a pair for Saanich from Travis Lindquist, both on scrambling hard work in the slot, and Jacques DuToit also fired a top shelf rocket between the two goals from Lindquist.

A frantic last couple of minutes had the Generals trying to tie it up with goalie Garrett Mate having gone to the bench with just over a minute left, but the Braves held on for the victory.

Later Generals player Ams Sidhu was quoted “ I had hoped my beeking of the Braves would have throw them off more” but Amer forgot that the boys were used to his astute verbalizations from last year…

Torrie Jung played solid for the Braves as the shots were 35-30 for the Generals.

Lindquist, Caldwell and Nugent had 3 points each for the Braves, while Jacques had the prettiest goal of the night

NOVEMBER 1 BRAVES vs GLACIER KINGS(6-2) : Braves are back
Saanich signals intentions for second half of the season - Ian Ross

Having slid down to 5th place in the league Saanich Braves were hanging their heads. After the embarrassment of a 5-3 defeat Saturday by the lowly Glacier Kings at Comox, it was time for a taking of stock. With the help of head coach Dick Crowder, the boys shook themselves out. Enough was enough. Following his 6-game suspension meted out in the brawl-filled match with Victoria 3 weeks ago, the passionate Crowder was back on the bench, the dynamic duToit brothers were back from injury, and Brian Nugent returned from guesting with the Nanaimo Clippers in their 4-3 victory over the Powell River Kings on Saturday. Between the posts for Saanich was Ed Lassard, skillfully lassooed by GM Chuck Meagherfrom AlbertaÂ’s Bonneville Pontiacs of the AJHL.
Tuesday night the Braves came out with the bit between their teeth. In the first minute the the home team heaped the pressure on, leading to a mad goalfront scramble in the Comox end. The puck trickled under disoriented KingsÂ’ goalie Evan Murray and into the net, but the refereeÂ’s whistle had blown. This goal was disallowed, but the Braves had signaled their intentions. Sean Bell made sure the gauntlet was well and truly thrown when he applied a crushing hit onto an oncoming King.
Seconds later alert Braves defender Scott Jamieson spotted Travis Linquist camped beside MurrayÂ’s net and issued a razor-sharp pass onto his stick for Travis to slot home. 1-0. Then when KingsÂ’ forward Brendin Shievink was sent off for slashing, the hungry Braves pounced. Brian Nugent floated deep into enemy territory to receive the puck from Dave Kucheran at the point and rifle a wrist shot into the upper left-hand corner of the KingÂ’s goal.
Less than six minutes into play Pat Sails made it three after a goal mouth scrum. The pressure did not let up, and replacement goalie Matt Young stopped a dangerous wrist shot from a marauding Dave Kucheran. The goals were not the only things that were coming hard and fast: the Braves were throwing their bodies into the action too, with big D-men Erik Johnson and Trevor Verwolf doing some notable bone-crunching. Before the action-packed period drew to a close, Verwolf put the icing on the cake with a booming slapshot after some slick passing had taken the feverish Braves up ice and into enemy territory. 4-0.
Goaltender Lessard somehow stayed awake through the period - having not seen much of the puck -and in the last minute he provided a butterfly flick save from the KingsÂ’ Steve Brown.
Comox came out strong in the second, Ryan Toporowski finding the net after two minutes. Generally the teams were more evenly balanced in this period, though this was due in no small measure to the performance of KingsÂ’ goalie Matt Young, who made several big glove saves in the last two periods. The Braves kept their heads and added two to their tally. Matt Irwin put home one of his big slaps from the point, and Jacques Dutoit ricocheted one in off the inside of the post after some nifty moves on the hapless King defence. In the third period, the sparky centreman somehow threaded the puck out from a melee in the Comox corner, deeked the last King defender out of his skates, but couldnÂ’t quite pull the rabbit from the hat as the busy Young pulled out another stop.
This was a dynamic performance from the Saanich Braves, whose power play went 4 for 6. To their credit, the Kings didnÂ’t give up, and even managed to apply some pressure in the dying minutes. With less than two minutes remaining, Josh Clare tipped in Kris CarverÂ’s shot from the point. Final score: 6-2.
For most of the game the Braves D-men had kept their new goalie well-protected, but Ed Lessard did come up with a big kick save a minute from the end, and as the buzzer sounded the Quebecois was warmly surrounded by his new western buddies. A corner has been turned; the Braves are back on track.

NOVEMBER 22 vs STORM (2-4) : Saanich 2, Campbell River 4

The game tonight would see Saanich outwork and outshoot the Storm, but to no avail. With shots of 41- 28 for Saanich one would think the game would have gone their way, but new Strom tender Bernier stood tall -literally- at 6'2" he covered a lot of net, and he robbed Saanich of what looked to be sure goals. Meanwhile at the Saanich end it was the all to familiar defensive giveaways which were real game drainers. Despite those mistakes the Braves squad fought a hard battle on the forcheck and most areas of the game and deserved much better. It appeared that the Storm were handed their opportunities by various Saanich miscues, while Saanich had to work hard for their opportunities and they did create them only to be frustrated on the night.

The first period saw Pat Sales from Jameison & Geric score the early goal. But then it was Arduin, Williamson, and Stephens replying with three goals for Campbell River. The last one was particularly tough as the Braves were on the power play but a poor pass decision deep in the Storm zone sent Campbell River away on a 3 on 0, and few of the Braves bothered to skate back hard to stop the goal which was scored on the third try after Affiliate midget goalie Jeff Clarkson did a good job stopping the first two attempts.

The third period really had the Braves all over the Storm, outshooting them 18-12, but again it was the Storm that struck first at 17:35 from Kreczmer after another Saanich defensive zone giveaway to the wrong colour jersey. Later in the period Saanich poured it on, and Brian Nugent finally solved Bernier just after the mid point of the period as he snapped a five-hole shot from a Eric Johnson rebound. The Braves kept buzzing the Storm net and had many chances including a glorious chance by Travis Lindquist parked at the back door and hit by a Nugent pass but Bernier got a pad on it again, and the game ended 4-2 Storm.

Game Notes:

Fairly rough game- Pat Sails received two hard hits from behind. The second from Jordan Siu who was rightfully ejected from the game. The first was a no call.

Bernier was a standout for the Storm, and 15 year old tender Jeff Clarkson put in a good performance for Saanich. Sails was the hardest working Braves forward while Matt Irwin got the much coveted coaches hardhat award for the game.

Next game on Saturday night against Comox, before having them back next Tuesday.

NOVEMBER15 vs KERRY PARK(3-3) : November 16th 2004

Saanich 3 - Kerry Park 3

After the 8-1 thrashing at the hands of the Islanders on Saturday night things seemed a little grim for Saanich. The mood would suggest that Saanich should put in a better showing but would it be enough against the surging Kerry Park team. The positive news was that there were fresh troops to help this night, and Jim Smart would be back.

The first period started out a little tentative for the Braves. The Affiliate Players called in for tonight's game showed good energy, but the team was a little shy about really taking it to the Islanders. Kerry Park ended up outshooting the Braves 9-8 and the score was 2-1 for Kerry Park. Luc Portwood and former Brave Rick Peereboom for Kerry Park and Jordan Caldwell for Saanich were the scorers.

The second period saw the Braves really step up. Jesse Tremblay from the JDF Midget A seemed to be the catalyst with a high energy period that witnessed him hand out some heavy checks. It acted like a tonic as the rest of the Braves started to follow suit. The usual hard working efforts came from Sails, Geric, and particularly Sean Bell, but others really increased their output such as d-man Chris Bell who would hit the post twice during this period and register a few big squashes. Dan Bell and Jerad Callbeck supplied a high-energy forcheck, and Jake Peterson gave a solid safe effort back on defense. I overheard one Kerry Park parent commenting "that the Saanich call up players filled in so well it gave the Braves a lot of depth"

Despite shots of 12-9 in favour of the Braves the scored remained 2-1 Kerry Park, but the momentum had definitely shifted to Saanich.

Kerry Park fought back early in the third, and the game went back and forth with a more even effort from both sides. During a particular hard working shift Sean Bell managed to pounce on a loose puck in the slot and rip by Halpenny to tie the game. This was a popular goal with his teammates as they knew how hard he had worked for it. However a few minutes later a Zimmerman penalty would give the Islanders a power play chance that sniper Paruk used to regain the lead. The Braves kept the pressure on and with 3:39 left Matt Irwin hammered a great low shot from the blue line to the back of the net. The third ended 3-3, and an exciting 5 minute overtime period would also end tied.

Recently signed goalie Mike Hokenson made many fine saves to round out the solid team effort by the Braves tonight. Hopefully the same will be said of the Friday night game in Campbell River.

Saanich suspended players are back in action on Monday night as the Braves return to Mill Bay to seek redemption over last Saturday nights game with Kerry Park.

OCTOBER 26 vs STORM (2-5) : Saanich 2, Campbell River 5

Despite outshooting the Storm 51 to 25, it was the Storm that came away with the victory. The difference seemed to be the quality of the opportunities.

Campbell River goalie Kyle Blanleil was very solid, but so was the defensive zone checking for the Storm. On many occasions when the Braves appeared to be ready to strike, their prime chance would disappear. At the Saanich end a few too many breakaways or 2 on 1's were allowed.

The first period went to Campbell River as they outworked the Braves and came away with the 1-0 lead. It could have ended much worse if Jung had not of been as solid as he was. The Braves legs were not quite into high gear yet after their long layoff with no games this past weekend. However the second period was all Saanich as their constant forcheck kept the Storm pinned in their own end. But the finish was missing, and at the end of the period the score remained the same.

Early in the third, the Braves were in the box and the Storm scored again, and the goal plus a few penalties seemed to take the wind out of Saanich as they went on to allow 3 more before coming back late in the period. Then with a strong rally late in the period it was Jim Smart who finally solved the Storm goalie, as he snapped a hard low shot from the deep slot. 16 seconds later Ryan Lee would also score. But too little too late.

Thompson, Cook, Johns and then Arduin with two were the scorers for Campbell River, as the Braves drop back to 8-8 on the season.

Next game in Parksville on Saturday night.

OCTOBER 19 vs GENERALS (6-1) : October 19th vs Oceanside Generals 6-1 win.

Last week ended as a low point in the season for the Braves. After a solid 5-0 win last week over the visiting Comox Kings, the Braves would lose both weekend games and slip back into a tie for 3rd and a 7-7 record.

On Friday night Saanich had the long bus ride to Campbell River where they were defeated 6-2 by the surging Storm. Then after returning home at 1:30am Saturday they returned to the ice that night at Kerry Park only to be embarrassed in a forgettable 6-1 loss. It appeared the legs were a little weary after the long night before.

Tonight the Braves were looking to rebound so as to get their winning percentage back on track. The Braves are 2W & 3L in their last 5 while the Oceanside team were worse at 0W & 3L & 2ties. One of the biggest differences between the teams is that Oceanside boasts one of the best power plays in the league led by their captain and league leading point getter Justin Enockson. The Saanich PP has been dismal, however they do have a strong PK record to help even things. The Braves knew they should have the edge with their 4 &2 home record, while Oceanside's road record currently stands at 3 & 4.

The Braves seemed to have high energy and the edge in play right from the start. At about minutes in Alan Zimmerman one-timed a Nugent pass, and Zimm got it all and it rocketed by Oceanside's Evan Murray. It seemed like an omen of events to happen when Oceanside's Am Sidhu, was struck by a high stick from one of his own players as he stood on the bench and he ended up with a suspected fractured nose.

At the mid point of the first period Leroy Young picked up a feed from Gretchen and Landolt, made a good move in the slot and then snapped it top corner for his first Junior goal. The puck was scooped for his trophy of the occasion.

The Braves went on to victory with a strong team effort. All players contributed well, and were backstopped with a commendable effort by Torrie Jung in net. Other goals in the 6-1 victory were from Etienne DuToit from Jacque, Ryan Lee from Sails and Jamieson, and Nugent was sent in on a breakaway goal from Caldwell, and Leroy Young collected his second of the night from Landolt

This win puts the Braves back into a tie for second place however they have played 3 more games than first and second place Campbell River and Victoria. Peninsula is also right behind them in points but having played 5 fewer games.

The standings are starting to resemble last year as the Teams settle in with their more permanent lineups. Campbell Rivers record of 4 wins & 1 loss in their last 5 has them back in first place, however the Panthers are also returning to last years form and might well be in first place soon. They have the best winning percentage and if they keep it going they will lead the league when they catch up in games. This weekend however is a terrible schedule for Peninsula that sees them play home on Friday against Campbell River, then Saturday in Comox, and then Sunday in Campbell River. Although they plan to stay up island Saturday night, Sundays game might be a weary one.

Saanich has a rare weekend off as the schedule allows the other teams to catch up in game numbers.

In the meantime the Saanich players enjoyed a good feed at Boston Pizza after the game to celebrate the positive win which helped erase the memory of the past weekend.

OCTOBER 12 VS GLACIER KINGS( 5-0) : Braves vs.. Comox Valley Glacier Kings Oct 12th

After last Friday nights' game at Peninsula the Braves were hoping to have a more successful outing tonight against Comox.
The first period seemed reasonably even as both teams checked hard trying to take the advantage. But even on a brief 5 on 3 for the Braves they couldn't get their struggling powerplay going. However finally with 8:24 left in the first, it was a good effort by Travis Lindquist to chip the puck by the defender to send Adam Geric in alone on Comox goalie Kyle Tomiye, and Geric would beat him with a perfectly placed shot low to the far corner.
The period ended 1-0 Saanich with 12-10 shots in the Braves favour.

The second period became all Braves. First it was a good deak around the Comox defenseman and then a better pass on the 2 on 1 from Brian Nugent to Jordan Caldwell which Caldwell finished by way of a nice backhand to the roof of the net. Then 30 seconds later on a scrambling battle in front of the net it was Etienne DuToit sliding in a close range shot from Jacque DuToit, and Ryan Lee for the Braves 3rd of the night. With 5:21 left in the second Brian Nugent pounced on a Ryan Lee rebound and slapped it high to the glove side for the Braves fourth. Braves captain Pat Sails also assisted on the play.

The third period became scrappy and 4 minutes in started with Thomas Grant deaking to the front of the net and sliding a low shot past the Comox goalie. Then it was touch and go whether the Braves goalie Hofer would be able to preserve his well deserved shut out as the Braves became sloppy and gave up many chances. But they did manage to hang on for Dustin who was very strong on the night. Frustration led to the Comox captain tackling down the hard working Jacque DuToit late in the third for which Kris Carver received a 10 misconduct, along with the Braves Trevor Verwolf.

Game Notes: It was a very good team effort for Saanich as all lines contributed. The Braves power play continued to struggle as they went 0-4, and also missed finishing many opportunities they created. The Braves also were 4-0 on their penalty kill. The shots ended 40-38 for Saanich, although the play seemed to be controlled by Saanich for much of the game.

Next game is this Friday night at the barn of Campbell River and then Saturday night at Kerry Park, before hosting Oceanside next Tuesday.

OCTOBER 2 vs GLACIER KINGS (5-4) : Saturday Oct 2 vs. Comox.

Saturday night going into Comox, the Braves knew that Comox had defeated Campbell River in a nasty battle the night before. What Saanich wasn't sure of was if this would leave Comox pumped and energetic about their first victory of the season or tired from the 9-6 battle. What neither team knew before the game is that it would turn out to be the DuToit show on Saturday night as the Braves family combo would burn the Comox Kings for 4 goals and one assist, and several photos for the web site.

The first Saanich goal came early at 3:29 as good work by Zimmerman and Etty DuToit led to brother Jacque netting his first of the night. The second Jacque goal came after the Braves held on thru a 5 on 3 power play for the Kings, and then came back on their own 5 on 3 against the Kings and Jamieson and Smart would combine in the set up before Jacque did some very quick stick handling to deek around goalie Tomiye. The period ended with the Braves leading the shots on goal with 9-5 advantage that seemed to leave the local fans quiet.

The second period got off to a quick start for Comox as Carver scored from Rogers at just 1:48 as Comox would show some real determination to turn the momentum their way during this period. However just a few seconds later the Braves Jamieson would get rewarded for going to the net as the Kings tender had trouble with a Jim Smart point shot which Tomiye dropped just as Jamieson cruised in and was able to poke it into the net.
After the Braves goal, the next 10 minutes were all Comox, as coach Duner seemed to rally his troops. Soon a poor Braves line change gave Comox the break they were waiting for and Shane Williamson blasted a high shot past Hofer from the face off circle.
Later in the period on one of the few Braves chances, Etty DuToit would reply with a nice wrister high to the glove side on Tomiye from the high slot, after a great set up effort by Dave Kucheran to get Etty the puck. Comox would score again to win the period 3-2 and also outchance the Braves 11-10.
Now it was Saanich's bench boss turn to rally the troops, and they did seem to respond as the Braves outshot the Kings 15-9 in the third period which saw both teams each score once. It was Allan Koch for the Kings after a defencesive mistake and then Jacque DuToit for the Braves collecting his third on the night. This allowed the Braves to hang onto a 5-4 victory.

Game Notes: Jacque DuToit and Scott Jamieson were named the games 1st and 3rd star.
Overall it wasn't one of the Braves best Team efforts with a few of the players apparently suffering from bus-itus after the long ride up, while the rest played very well. Notable players who worked very hard were Sails, Young, Sean Bell, and rookie goalie Torrie Jung was sent in at towards the end of the second period and made some key saves. Irwin was also solid on the blueline.

SEPTEMBER 28 vs STORM : Braves vs. Campbell River Storm Tuesday September 28, 2004- Mike Nugent Reporting

The large crowd of Saanich supporters seemed to sense the importance of the game. A win would put wither the Braves or the Storm into first place overall. The young Saanich team seemed to have momentum on their side after the win Saturday night in Parksville.

The first period was very tight checking, with neither team being able to breakout of the others grip. Twice the Storm managed a 2 on 1, but the Braves Hofer was there to close the door. The Campbell River goalie, Miszczak, was also solid. The Storm outshot Saanich 11-8 in the first.

The second period seemed to favour the Braves and at the midpoint of the period hard work by Ryan Lee, Jon Gretchen, and Pat Sails led to Sails getting free in front of the net and calmly tucking the puck around the downed Storm goalie. However the hardworking Storm team pressed back and 5 minutes later it was Duncan Byner from Butler-Smyth, and Tim Johns who tied the game at 1 each.

Early in the third the Storm struck again as Jeff Kreczmer again from Butler-Smyth scored. Much of the rest of the third the Saanich squad seemed frustrated as they worked hard but could not seem to get the chances they needed to score, until the 14 minute mark when Etienne DuToit dropped a pass for Brian Nugent who then stepped into a slapper that beat the Storm goalie to the blocker side. But 3 minutes later Kyle Williamson would reply for the Storm as he jammed one in which Braves goalie Hofer protested to the Referees to no avail that it had been kicked in. The Braves poured the pressure on in the closing seconds but they couldn't get the tieing goal they needed.

Overall it was a close game, that was relatively clean. But the difference on the night seemed to be that when the Braves got it into the scoring zone the Storm managed to bootle it up and not allow clean chances, where as in the Saanich end a couple of defensive miscues gave the Storm a couple of chances which they finished. The Braves edged the Storm in shots at 39-37.
The Storm will move into first place with 6 wins and 2 losses, while Saanich will remain in 4th place with a 4-4 record. For Saanich it was a vast improvement over last year, yet it was still a disappointment.

The next game for Saanich is Saturday at Comox, the night after Comox takes on the Storm on Friday.
